The Imperial Revisited

Saturday 9th September, 2023

Moseley Road Baths | 19:00 - 21:30

Across the road from Moseley Road Baths once stood the Imperial, a cinema which was at the heart of the local community in the 60s and 70s.

This evening we'll be taking a trip back to the golden age of Hindi cinema, with classic songs from the likes of Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle along with two rarely-seen BBC films, both from 1973:

A Touch of Eastern Promise - half hour drama about a boy who meets his favourite star, filmed at the Imperial itself and featuring many locals as extras in the audience.
Bombay Superstar - documentary focussing on the late actor Rajesh Khanna, at the height of his fame. Includes interviews with Shashi Kapoor and Mumtaz, and footage of Khanna's surprise wedding to Dimple Kapadia.

Presented in association with Birmingham Indian Film Festival, The Imperial Revisited is part of Balsall Heath's Living Room.

Schedule:

7pm: Music and classic film clips
7:30pm: Man Alive: Bombay Superstar (BBC 1973, 50 mins)
8:20pm: Interval
8:45pm: A Touch of Eastern Promise (BBC 1973, 30 mins)

Free food will be available on the night.
