Any new film from animation royalty Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville, The Illusionist) is a cause for celebration, but since it’s been over a decade since his last feature, this feels extra special.
A Magnificent Life is a lush, hand-drawn biopic of the legendary French polymath Marcel Pagnol.
Set in 1955, we find an aging Pagnol struggling with a crisis of confidence and a failing memory. When ELLE magazine commissions a column about his childhood, he finds himself visited by Little Marcel (his younger self) who leads him on a magical-realist trip through his own past.
From the sun-baked hills of Provence to the high-stakes talkie revolution in Paris, Chomet uses his signature style to render a life defined by storytelling, invention, and a defiant refusal to grow up.
This film is a gorgeous, dewy-eyed celebration of the creative spirit, co-written with Pagnol’s own grandson. If you’ve missed Chomet’s whimsical, meticulous craftsmanship, this is the big-screen homecoming you’ve been waiting for.
