We’re teaming up with Whatever Pays the Rent to present an immersive screening of Donkey Skin (1970), Jacques Demy’s dazzling fantasy musical.

Where French New Wave meets fairy tale, Donkey Skin stars Catherine Deneuve as a princess who escapes her father’s kingdom to avoid an unwanted marriage. She finds refuge in a humble cottage where she takes on a new life baking cakes for a nearby prince.

As it happens, the cottage bears a resemblance to Selly Manor Museum, a 700-year-old timber-framed hall nestled in the heart of Bournville - our venue for the night's proceedings.

A surreal, sumptuous spectacle, the film overflows with saturated colour, elaborate costumes, inventive practical effects and playful set design. Add in enchanting songs and a fairy godmother, and you have a French cinema cult favourite.
