A visceral adaptation of Gary Owen’s acclaimed play Iphigenia in Splott, this Welsh-language powerhouse transports the story to the rugged landscape of Blaenau Ffestiniog - a town where the jobs have vanished and the clouds hang low.
At the heart of the film is a magnetic, career-defining performance by Leisa Gwenllian as Effi. Initially a loud-mouthed party girl fueling a cycle of hangovers with cheap vodka, Effi’s life is upended by a chance encounter with an injured soldier.
What begins as a gritty, foul-mouthed character study evolves into a state-of-the-nation howl, exposing a social crisis of underfunded hospitals and impossible choices.
Directed by Marc Evans, the film beautifully juxtaposes the harshness of institutional neglect with the tranquil beauty of the Eryri (Snowdonia) scenery. It’s a fierce, heart-wrenching, and ultimately human portrait of a woman refusing to be swallowed by a system that has failed her.
