The Last Viking reunites director Anders Thomas Jensen with his long-time muses Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas for a dark comedy that is as tender as it is teeth-rattling.
Kaas stars as Anker, a bank robber fresh out of a fifteen-year stretch, eager to collect the 41 million kroner he left with his brother Manfred (Mikkelsen). The only snag? Manfred has developed a dissociative disorder and now firmly believes he is John Lennon. To find the loot, Anker must navigate a surreal landscape of The Beatles reimagined by psychiatric patients, a very bad perm, and the lingering ghosts of a fractured childhood.
In typical Jensen style, it’s a high-velocity blend of slapstick, sudden violence, and profound empathy. It’s a film about the stories we tell ourselves to survive, and a rare chance to see Mikkelsen at his most fearlessly silly. An anarchic masterpiece from Denmark’s favorite cinematic troublemakers.
