Roll up, roll up! Come one, come all and see how you can help engage children in film through this new opportunity offered by Flatpack: Assemble in collaboration with Little Earthquake.

Continuing in the theme of our previous ‘Build Your Own’ strands - which include ‘Build Your Own Film Night’ and ‘Build Your Own Audience’ - we offer a fantastic opportunity to not only facilitate film screenings, but gain skills in presenting and creating workshops. We’re calling it ‘Build Your Own Compere’ (or BYOC for short).

BYOC is the next step in Flatpack: Assemble’s aim to build a more thriving film community in the West Midlands. Through it, we hope to create a team of well-prepared and trained hosts that will go into venues to act as the middle-ground between kids, their families, and what they see on the screen. What does this translate to in real terms? Well, we recently held a DIY Drive-In Cinema in collaboration with Amy Martin of FAMALAM, in which Amy supported the kids while they made cars from cardboard boxes. They then sat in the cars they'd made and watched a selection of short animated films that were focused on transport, resulting in a fun and focused afternoon. You can check out photos and feedback from the DIY Drive-In here.

We want to do more events like this, ones that offer a more interactive experience than a traditional screening, but to do this we need hosts! We’re looking for people who can work creatively with families and their young children - including tiny toddlers.

Providing the training is Little Earthquake, a Birmingham-based theatre company co-directed by Gareth Nicholls and Philip Holyman. The training will be done via a 2 day workshop, split between the 22nd and 29th January 2017, and is completely free!

If you’re interested in being a host, please complete the application by 9am, Friday 6th January. You can find the application here.
