The ever-popular Magic Cinema returns this year with a slightly different remit. Whilst maintaining their open submission policy, they’re embracing the Optical Sound theme with a selection of audio-visual works which all have a live element.

Barry Griffiths - DreaMach9 DreaMach9 ... stare with eyes shut ... recognise what isn't there ... supersede with image rare ... layer ... fringed vision ... each person seeks their deamon ... cornea glimpsed ... lead by flicker ...  living brain ... ten hurts ... rhythm traction ... relax ... you are falling awake ...

Rachel Mayfield - Rehearsing Live: how a song is made Rachel debuts a song from 'Show Me Your Birmingham' her latest live music and film exhibition. The backing singers get to hear the song for the first time and are invited to learn their part in front of a live audience. The exhibition is both a reflection of the artist's first year returning to live in her city of birth and an exploration of authenticity and the search for personal connection. The full exhibition will run throughout the Summer inhabiting various locations across the city.

Reuben B. Penny - Flailing Frames In a short film from 1905 dance pioneer Loie Fuller performs a mesmerising routine in a spectacular colour changing dress. 111 years later this silent piece is accompanied by an ensemble of whirly tube players, with each player whirling their tube faster when they see their colour on the screen. Audience participation encouraged.Ferric Lux - Physical Enclosures and Psychic Gateways Ferric Lux makes occult influenced slow motion techno. The resulting live VJ experiences are informed by the symbolic, ritualistic and alchemical in an attempt to find a through line between dance music, folk, black metal and experimental film.
