Dreamerfly, and other stories

Friday 24th September, 2021

MAC Foyle Studio | 20:00 - 20:45

Combining multi-screen animation and a sublime contemporary jazz music score, this immersive performance is a treat for the eyes and ears.

Co-produced and directed by Shiyi Li, Gloria Yehilevsky and James Owston of Sounding Eye Collective, the project features music composed by British Jazz bassist James Owston, joined in performance by British-Bruneian guitarist Daniel Kemshell and American percussionists Lindsey Eastham and Gloria Yehilevsky. They will be joined by video designer Tyler Cunningham.

The animation centres on the ancient Chinese philosophy known as ‘The Butterfly Dream’ - a man falls asleep and dreams he is a butterfly. When he wakes, he is unsure whether he really was a man who had dreamed he was a butterfly or whether he was a butterfly now dreaming he was a man.

Audience members will be plunged into this space of reality and nothingness, exploring this and other stories that seek to find balance in chaos. Dreamerfly will take you on a journey of self exploration and discovery through five chapters - struggle, loss, lonely, balance and rebirth - with hypnotic music and visuals so vibrant and otherworldly, you might just think you’re dreaming...

The entire Dreamerfly team is part of Sounding Eye Collective. Sounding Eye Collective create immersive works which engage the audience in a multisensory experience, not only engaging the eyes and ears, but also the intellect, memory and empathy.

This engagement is supported by Mid Atlantic Arts through USArtists International in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
