Slacker

Sunday 19th May, 2024

The Mockingbird Cinema - Screen 2 | 13:00 - 14:40

Written by, directed by and starring Richard Linklater, Slacker establishes his “day in the life” style that he later returned to in Dazed and Confused and the Before… trilogy.

Here, we focus on Austin, Texas where a roaming camera quickly introduces us to quirky characters such as pension-age philosophers, out-of-this-world conspiracy theorists and pop culture vultures before moving swiftly on for some sublime, silly and surreal snapshots.

In 2012, the US’ National Film Registry selected Slacker for preservation, declaring it “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant.” If you want to experience the 90s, then short of building a time machine, this is your best bet.

Part of our Linklater strand alongside the Before… trilogy and a live musical performance by Linklater’s go-to guy, Graham Reynolds.
