Digbeth Reanimated

Saturday 18th May, 2024

Pan-Pan | 11:00 - 13:30

Digbeth is an area in flux; an industrial district undergoing constant transformation, yet always feeling like Digbeth. Visually it’s one of the most stimulating parts of the city and this walking workshop, led by Andy Howlett of Walkspace, will take an animator’s eye to its ever-changing streetscape.

After a quick tutorial on the principles of stop-motion animation, participants will take to the streets with iPads to photograph the patterns, textures and features of the urban fabric. The resulting image sequences will become short, impressionistic video records of the walk, bringing the streets of Digbeth to life before your eyes. Those who wish can have their work shared later in the day as part of the Flatpack Awards but this is optional.

No prior experience of animation, photography or iPads required. The walk will last around 90 minutes, beginning and finishing at Pan-Pan.

We’ll walk at a very gentle pace as it’s all about slowing down and paying attention. The terrain is pavement, tarmac and roads with some slight inclines. Steps will be avoided and drop kerbs will be used to cross roads where available. Wear footwear appropriate for urban walking and consider bringing water and something to snack on.

With thanks to Reel Access
